Blue line: change the rein across the long diagonal with a flying change when reaching the track.

Orange line: change the rein across the short diagonal with a flying change when reaching the track.

Green line: flying change on the centre line.

Lilac line: flying change on the five metre line.

• Medium or extended canter, collect and change: collecting the canter sits the horse on its quarters and engages the hind leg, the shoulder is freed up and the change can come through.

• Ask for a flying change when riding down the long side on the centre or five metre line: this prepares the horse for tempi changes (a series of flying changes with a given number of strides between each change).

• Flying change in medium canter: keep the tension through the horse’s body, maintain a fluid uphill canter using half halts to alert the horse to the changes and maintain control.
